Nestled in over four acres of woodland in the heart of Long Island wine country, this beautiful post and beam beach house was fully renovated to serve as the perfect space for living, hosting, and relaxation.
"My goal was to create a home that felt both modern and timeless," said Natalie Rebuck of Re: Design Architects. "I wanted to avoid the outdated features that can be found in many homes of this type, but still retain a sense of place between forest and sea."
The original interior was dark and heavy, prompting Rebuck to paint the first floor’s exposed beams white to brighten up the space.
The original kitchen was expanded and an island with drawers and shelving was added to maximize storage space. Sleek, modern blue and white cabinetry along with state-of-the-art appliances were installed to create a warm, functional space. The home's open plan layout also connects the kitchen to the dining space.
At the top of the stairs, you are greeted by an impressive built-in, antique bookcase. Rebuck took great care to restore the shelves and paired them with a dramatic painting of Harold Knight by Philip Gurrey. Overall, the landing provides a dynamic space with the backdrop of the bay beyond.
The original primary bedroom was expansive, allowing Rebuck to add a luxurious ensuite to round-out the space. The new primary bathroom oasis was designed with Art Deco tile, a soaking bathtub, and custom-built walk in closets. The design was finished off with a beautiful bubble chandelier and Restoration Hardware sconces.
In the primary bedroom, custom black and brown linen and velvet curtains were installed to add sophistication to the space. An eye-catching sculpture brought back from South Africa is exhibited prominently in the room.
The top floor of the home provides the clearest view to the bay which Rebuck showcases with an antique telescope and vintage rocking chairs. The bathroom on this floor proved to be one of the home’s more challenging spaces. Rebuck knew she wanted a full bath but creating a space that made sense was difficult. She cleverly decided to tile an oddly shaped space nestled into the eaves of the room to carve out a luxurious, open shower.
Two guest bedrooms, each with their own distinct design style, fill the remainder of the top floor. Rebuck created an incredibly playful bunk room. which serves as a terrific space for hosting multiple guests, sleepovers, and family.
The other guest room on the top floor houses what Rebuck refers to as the “redroom.” This guest room features striking red wallpaper, and bedding from Serena and Lily. Side tables purchased from a garage sale complement the Asian inspired walls.
The basement has been brightly decorated to include a pool table, full bar, and wine cellar. Rebuck has also balanced modern, playful style with nautical and antique wood features to emphasize the house's unique location.
"I'm really pleased with how the project has turned out," said Rebuck. "The home feels both comfortable and luxurious, and I'm sure the family will be able to enjoy it for many years to come."
